Choosing a kurta for the haldi

The haldi is the one function where your kurta will get dirty, and everybody knows it. Turmeric paste on the cheeks, marigold petals in the hair, an aunt with a bowl who does not ask first. So the right haldi kurta is not the most expensive one in your cupboard. It is the one that looks bright in morning light, forgives a yellow smear, and lets you sit on a low stool for an hour.

At our counter, families shopping for a haldi ask two questions before anything else: will it photograph well in daylight, and what happens when the haldi lands on it. This collection is chosen around those two answers.

Why yellow, and when not to wear it

Yellow is the classic because haldi on yellow simply disappears. A mustard or marigold kurta can take a hand on the shoulder and still look clean in the photos. The Golden Marigold Self-Stripe, ₹1,900, is the pick we reach for first for guests: the stripe hides marks better than a plain surface.

If the family has asked guests to wear one colour, follow the family. If the bride's side is wearing yellow and you are on the groom's side, a checked or printed kurta with yellow in it keeps you in the theme without blending into the bride's family. The Orange Gold Checkerboard and the Chartreuse Checkerboard, both ₹1,900, do exactly that.

For the groom and his brothers

The groom's haldi is usually at home or in the courtyard, with the closest family. He gets photographed more than anyone, so he can go one step dressier than the guests. The Pale Yellow Butter-Gold Loop-Button, ₹3,999, with a churidar, is soft enough for daylight and special enough for the album. Brothers often pair with him in the Golden Mustard Woven-Trim, ₹3,999, which sits a shade deeper so the groom still stands out.

A tip from the counter: buy the groom's haldi kurta as a separate piece from his mehendi kurta. People try to make one kurta do both, and the haldi always wins.

Prints for the guests who will sit on the floor

Most haldi functions end with everyone on the floor, laughing, with a plate in hand. A printed kurta is the most practical choice for that. The Butter Yellow Paisley Print and the Mustard Geometric Print, both ₹1,900, keep the festive look while hiding what the day throws at them.

How to wear it

Keep the pajama white or off-white and expect it to be the first thing to stain. Choose kolhapuri chappals or old juttis, never new suede shoes. Leave the watch at home and keep a plain handkerchief in the pocket for turmeric on the hands. Questions we hear at the counter

Which colour kurta is best for a haldi?

Yellow, mustard and marigold, because turmeric disappears on them. Checks and prints with yellow in them work just as well and photograph more interestingly.

Can I wear white to a haldi?

You can, but expect it to come home yellow. If you love white, choose an off-white with a print, or keep white for the pajama only.

What should the groom wear to his haldi?

Something soft and light that looks special in daylight, such as a pale yellow kurta with a churidar. Save the heavy embroidery for the evening functions.

Will haldi come out of the kurta?

Usually, if you act the same day. Scrape off the paste, rinse from the back in cold water and follow the care label. Our product pages advise dry cleaning for the first wash.

Do I need a different kurta for the mehendi?

It helps. The haldi kurta often needs a wash before it can be worn again, and the mehendi usually falls on the same day or the next.
