Dressing the groom's side of the family

In most families the groom wears a sherwani and the family around him wear kurtas. The job of the kurta is to sit one step below the groom: rich, dressed and photographable, but not competing with him. Get that right and the family photograph looks like a family. Get it wrong and the father looks underdressed beside his own son, or an uncle looks like a second groom.

We have dressed groom's families at our counter for decades, and the order of questions never changes. First the functions, then the colours, then the sizes. This collection is the dressier end of our range: all 19 sets are ₹3,999, each with a churidar, in woven-trim, brocade, jacquard and scroll embroidery.

The groom's father

A father wants to look settled, not flashy. Deep, calm colours do that best. The Navy Woven-Trim, the Deep Teal Woven-Trim and the Charcoal Grey Double-Scroll, all ₹3,999, carry a trim or tonal work that shows in photographs without pulling the eye. Add a plain jacket for the baraat if the evening is cold.

The groom's brothers

Brothers stand beside the groom in most of the pictures, so they carry more of the colour. The Maroon Dobby Loop-Button, the Emerald Gold Brocade Loop-Button and the Ochre Gold Brocade Loop-Button are the three we show first. Each has a clear colour and a surface that catches light at night. Coordinate rather than match: two brothers in maroon and emerald look better than two in the same piece. Our guide to the groom's brother's outfit for every function gives the full plan.

Uncles, cousins and friends

A bigger family needs a wider choice, so that nobody feels assigned a costume. The Olive Green Woven-Trim, the Rust Copper Woven-Trim and the Sage Sand Melange Double-Scroll give an easy middle: rich enough for the wedding, calm enough for the uncle who prefers to blend in.

One family, one palette

The simplest way to make a big group look planned is to pick two or three colours and let each person choose within them. Maroon, deep green and gold works. Navy, teal and sand works. Ask each branch of the family to take one colour family and you get a cohesive group without anyone wearing the same piece.

From haldi to baraat

The haldi calls for yellow, and two sets here fit it: the Golden Mustard Woven-Trim and the Pale Yellow Butter-Gold Loop-Button. For the sangeet and the baraat, move to the deeper pieces such as the Deep Maroon Scroll-Panel and the Mustard Gold Scroll-Panel. For the whole run of functions, read our haldi, mehendi and sangeet guide.

Ordering for the whole party

If the family is large, do not order one by one. Message us on WhatsApp with the functions, the dates and everyone's size. We put the sets together, show them to you on a video call from the shop floor and send everything in one order. Every size online lists the real chest, length, shoulder and sleeve, and you have seven days to exchange for another size at either shop.

Sizes

Online, sizes run 38 to 44 today. Both our shops also carry plus sizes up to 6XL and kurtas for boys and babies, coming online soon, so one order can dress three generations.

Questions we hear at the counter

What should the groom's father wear to the wedding?

A kurta in a deep, calm colour with some work, such as navy, teal or charcoal, with a churidar. Dressed, but one step below the groom.

What should the groom's brother wear?

A kurta with a clear colour and richer work, because he stands beside the groom in the photographs. Maroon, emerald and ochre brocade are the usual choices.

Should the whole groom's family match?

Coordinate, do not match. Pick two or three colours for the family and let each person choose within them.

Can I order for the whole family at once?

Yes. Send us the functions, dates and sizes on WhatsApp. We show options on a video call and ship in one order.

What if a size is wrong close to the wedding?

You have seven days to exchange at either shop. If the date is close, tell us when you order and we will check the measurements with you first.
