Go a shade bolder than you would for family. Sky blue chikankari or lilac with sequins both read as thoughtful, not safe. If you are both going to the same party, this is also how the "matching without matching" photo happens.

Bright yellow works if he already wears colour. Royal blue is the one that works no matter what he usually wears, festive enough for the evening, calm enough that he will reach for it again after Diwali.
