Two functions, two different kurtas

The mehendi and the sangeet are often a day apart, sometimes only a few hours. Families treat them as one party and then wonder why the same kurta looks wrong at night. The mehendi is a daytime function: light, cushions on the floor, hands busy with henna, photographs in sunshine. The sangeet is the opposite: evening light, a stage, a dance floor and a long night. That difference decides what you wear.

At our counter, the question we hear most before these two functions is simple: can I wear one kurta to both? You can, if you choose carefully. This page helps you decide whether to.

The mehendi: light colours, easy fits, nothing precious

Henna means someone is holding your hand away from your clothes for an hour, so pick something you do not have to guard. Soft pinks, peaches and corals sit well beside the greens and marigolds of a mehendi set-up. The Coral Pink Self-Stripe, ₹1,900, is the easy answer: a quiet tonal stripe in a colour that works in daylight. The Peach Dash Dot Print and the Coral Geometric Print, both ₹1,900, are for the guest who wants a print without looking loud.

For someone dressing up a little more, the Rose Pink Woven-Trim, ₹3,999, with a churidar, suits the groom's side or a close relative. And the Blush Pink Solid, ₹1,850, is the simplest kurta in this collection and often the one that gets worn again after the wedding.

The sangeet: richer colour, more work, room to move

Evening light is kind to deep colours and to work that catches the light. This is where the brocade, jacquard and embroidered pieces earn their place. The Deep Maroon Scroll-Panel, ₹3,999, and the Emerald Gold Brocade Loop-Button, ₹3,999, both read as dressed up without needing a jacket. The Purple Magenta Damask Scroll-Panel, ₹3,999, is for the guest who plans to be seen on the dance floor.

If the invitation says "Indo-western" or "festive" and you would rather stay quieter, a plain surface in a bright colour still works. The Turquoise Jade Solid Loop-Button, ₹3,999, has a clean front and a colour that holds up under stage lights and a phone camera.

A kurta you can actually dance in

Before you buy for a sangeet, do three things. First, check the shoulder and sleeve numbers on the product page against a kurta you already move comfortably in. Second, choose a churidar or a straight pajama you can lift your knees in. Third, try the full set once at home: raise both arms above your head and take a few steps of whatever you plan to dance. Every size online lists the real chest, length, shoulder and sleeve of the garment, so you can run this check before you order.

One kurta or two?

If you only want to buy one, choose a mid-tone with a little work, such as a deep rose, teal or green piece. It looks fine in sunlight and good by night. If you are buying two, make the mehendi kurta light and the sangeet kurta dark, and keep the pajama in one colour so you only have one to pack.

Sizes

Online, sizes run 38 to 44 today. Both our shops also carry plus sizes up to 6XL and kurtas for boys and babies, coming online soon. If a whole family needs sangeet outfits, message us on WhatsApp with the sizes and we will send photos from the shop floor.

Questions we hear at the counter

What should a guest wear to a mehendi?

Something light and comfortable in a soft colour: peach, coral, pink or a pastel print. You will be sitting for a long time, so choose an easy fit.

What should men wear to a sangeet?

A kurta with some work, in a deeper colour, and a fit that lets you dance. Brocade, embroidery or jacquard all work. A jacket is optional.

Can I wear the same kurta to the mehendi and the sangeet?

Yes, if it sits in the middle: a mid-tone with a little work. Change the pajama colour or add a stole for the evening to make it feel different.

Will henna stain my kurta?

Wet henna can. Keep your hands away from the kurta until the paste dries and flakes off, and keep a napkin in your pocket for the first hour.

Which colours should I avoid at a mehendi?

Follow the family's theme first. If there is none, avoid heavy blacks and very dark colours in the daytime, and avoid white if henna or turmeric is being passed around.
