White and off-white: what you are actually choosing

"White kurta" covers a surprising range. At our counter, a customer who asks for white might mean bright white, ivory, cream, ecru, beige or sand, and each one looks different in a photograph and against skin. This collection holds all of them, and we have named each one exactly, so you do not have to guess from a thumbnail. Three are white or ivory. The other five are softer off-white tones: ecru, cream, tan and sand.

White is the colour people reach for when the occasion is quiet: a puja, a prayer, a morning with the elders, Eid. It is also the colour that shows every mark, so it helps to choose with the day in mind.

White and ivory

The White Camo Bird Print and the Ivory Dash Dot Print, both ₹1,900, carry a small print that keeps white interesting, which suits Eid and festive everyday wear. The Ivory Pathani, ₹2,200, is a plain surface in the Pathani cut with a salwar, and it is a good choice for Eid.

Cream, ecru and sand

Off-white tones photograph more warmly than white and sit better beside gold, marigold and the colours of a festive room. The Cream Camo Bird Print and the Ecru Stripe, both ₹1,900, are the easy ones. The Tan Multicolour Melange, ₹1,900, and the Beige Tan Pathani, ₹2,200, lean toward sand and suit men who want a neutral without a flat white. For a dressier occasion, the Sage Sand Melange Double-Scroll, ₹3,999, adds tonal scroll work in a soft sand and sage.

White versus cream in photographs

Bright white can look harsh under a phone flash and bluish in shade. Cream and ecru forgive both. If the family photograph matters, choose cream or ivory, and keep the pajama in the same shade, because a bright white pajama under a cream kurta shows a line at the hem.

Where white works, and where it does not

White works at pujas and prayer meetings, on Eid mornings, at a housewarming and at a quiet family lunch. It is a poor choice at a haldi, where turmeric is passed around, and at a mehendi where the henna is wet. Our Diwali puja guide covers how to wear it through the day.

Keeping white clean

Wear it once, then wash it on its own, away from coloured clothes, and follow the care label. Our product pages advise dry cleaning for the first wash. Keep a spare in the same shade for a long day, and carry a damp cloth for a drop of tea or a smear of chutney.

What to pair it with

A white kurta looks best with a white or off-white pajama, tan or brown footwear and very little else. A cream kurta looks sharper with an off-white pajama than with bright white. If you want colour, add it with a stole or a jacket, not with the kurta. Our guide to how to accessorise a kurta has the options.

Questions we hear at the counter

Can men wear white to a Diwali puja?

Yes. White and cream are common at pujas. Add a stole or a marigold garland if you want colour in the photographs.

What is the difference between white and off-white?

White is bright and cool. Off-white, such as ivory, cream or ecru, has a warm tint and looks softer in a photograph and beside gold.

Which is better for Eid, white or cream?

Either works. White and ivory are the classic choice. A cream or sand Pathani is a good option if you want something warmer.

How do I stop a white kurta getting stained?

Sit with a napkin, avoid pushing sleeves into dishes, and treat a mark the same day. Dry clean the first wash and follow the care label after that.

Do you have a pure white kurta?

Two sets are white or ivory with a print, and the Ivory Pathani is plain. Message us on WhatsApp if you want to see more white pieces from the shop.
