What to wear when you sit down for a puja

A puja kurta has one job that a party kurta never has: it must let you sit on the floor, cross-legged, for a long time, without pulling at the shoulder or riding up at the knee. After that, it should look calm. Nobody at a puja is looking at your kurta, and nobody should have to. The right one disappears into the occasion and lets the family photograph look good.

Families come to us before the Diwali puja, before a griha pravesh, before a satyanarayan katha or a new shop opening. The questions repeat, so here are the answers we give.

Colours that sit well in a puja room

Pastels, whites and soft earthy tones are the safest, because they do not compete with the marigolds, the diyas and the saree colours around you. The Powder Blue Plain, ₹1,900, is the quiet pick: a clean surface in a colour that suits a morning puja. The Blush Pink Solid, ₹1,850, and the Sage Green Floral Printed, ₹2,485, are soft without being plain, and they photograph well beside the decorations.

For the evening aarti, a deeper colour looks right by lamplight. The Navy Blue Solid, ₹1,950, and the Royal Blue Solid, ₹1,850, are the two we suggest first.

When you want a little more colour

Yellow and marigold are auspicious colours and many families choose them on purpose. The Golden Marigold Self-Stripe, ₹1,900, and the Bright Yellow Solid, ₹3,499, are the two to look at. If you prefer pattern, the Green Yellow Checkerboard, the Mint Paisley Print and the Cream Camo Bird Print, all ₹1,900, are easy and cheerful.

A step up for a special puja

For a housewarming or a big family puja where you are the host, wear something with fine work and a calm colour. The Ice Blue Vine-Embroidery and the Seafoam Mint Vine-Embroidery, both ₹3,999, with churidars, look dressed without looking like a wedding.

Sitting comfortably

Before you buy, check three things. Look at the length and the chest numbers on the product page, and compare them with a kurta you already sit in comfortably. Choose a pajama that is not tight at the knee. And try the full set once, sitting cross-legged on the floor at home, before the day. Every size online lists the real chest, length, shoulder and sleeve of the garment.

For the full week of Diwali, read our guide to the Diwali puja at home and what to wear on each of the five days.

What to keep simple

Skip anything shiny, anything with a big logo and anything very new that you have not worn once. Leave the shoes outside, so there is no need to think about footwear until the puja is over. Keep the pajama white or off-white and plain.

Online, sizes run 38 to 44 today. Both our shops also carry plus sizes up to 6XL and kurtas for boys and babies, coming online soon. If you are dressing the whole family for the puja, message us on WhatsApp and we will show you options from the shop floor.

Questions we hear at the counter

What should men wear for a Diwali puja?

A plain, comfortable kurta pajama in a soft colour, with a white or off-white pajama. Pastels in the morning, a deeper colour for the evening aarti.

Is black acceptable at a puja?

Many families avoid black at a puja, so it is simplest to choose another colour. Navy, green or a pastel is a safer choice.

Can I wear a printed kurta to a puja?

Yes, if the print is small and calm, such as a paisley or a fine check. Avoid large graphics or loud patterns.

What should the host wear at a griha pravesh?

A kurta with some fine work in a calm colour, a bit more dressed than the guests. Keep the pajama white or off-white.

Can children and elders wear matching colours?

Yes, and families like it. Choose one colour family for everyone. Message us on WhatsApp with the sizes and we will help match the set.
