It is your first Diwali as a son-in-law or a daughter-in-law, and you want to give your father-in-law something that says you are family. You do not know him well enough to guess, and you cannot ask him directly. A kurta is a good answer, because he will wear it on Diwali, and it does not need to be expensive.
Here is how to choose one with confidence, even if you have never seen his wardrobe.
Get his size without asking him
This is the part that worries most people, and it is easy. Ask your mother-in-law, your spouse or his help for a kurta or shirt he already wears and likes. Lay it flat and measure four things: the chest (armpit to armpit, then doubled), the length, the shoulder and the sleeve. Every product page lists the same four numbers for the garment, so you can compare them directly. Our guide on how to measure for a kurta at home shows each step. Online sizes run 38 to 44, and both our shops carry plus sizes up to 6XL, so message us if he needs more room.
Colours that work for a father-in-law
Choose a colour he can wear to the puja and the family dinner. The Navy Blue Solid, ₹1,950, is the safest choice, and the Royal Blue Solid, ₹1,850, is a little brighter. If he likes a bit of colour, the Bottle Green Chikankari-Style, ₹3,499, is a good step up. For a gentler look, the Mauve Chikankari-Style, ₹3,499, is soft and quiet.
If you want to give something special
For a father-in-law who dresses with care, or for a first Diwali that deserves a little more, the Charcoal Grey Double-Scroll, ₹3,999, or the Ice Blue Vine-Embroidery, ₹3,999, come with a churidar and fine work. Both are calm enough to wear again at a family wedding.
What to avoid
Do not choose anything loud, anything very tight or anything black. Choose a colour he has worn before, if you can see one in a photograph. Do not choose a trendy cut he will find uncomfortable. A regular fit in a calm colour is always a good gift.
A set, with a pajama
Every kurta comes as a set with a pajama, so there is nothing else to buy. If he already has pajamas, the Kurta only option costs ₹200 less.
Getting it to him
If your in-laws live in another city, we can send it to their address. Delivery is free in Delhi and free across India above ₹1,999, and cash on delivery is available. Message us on WhatsApp with the address and the date, and we will confirm the delivery before you order.
If the size is wrong
You have seven days to exchange for another size at either of our Delhi shops with the order number. If your in-laws live elsewhere, message us and we will help over WhatsApp. Tell us the date of the festival when you order, so we can check the measurements with you first.
The first Diwali, a small ritual
Many families make the gift part of the day: after the puja, with sweets, with a photograph. A hand-written note helps. For other gift ideas, read what to gift your father this Diwali and see our Papa ke liye collection. For how to wear it through the week, see the five days of Diwali.
Questions we hear at the counter
What is a good Diwali gift for a father-in-law?
A kurta in a calm colour such as navy, bottle green or charcoal. It is useful, it is worn on the day and it is not too personal.
How do I find my father-in-law's size?
Measure a kurta or shirt he already wears, flat, and compare the four numbers with the product page. Or ask us on WhatsApp.
Can I send it to his address?
Yes. Delivery is free in Delhi and above ₹1,999 across India, and cash on delivery is available.
What if he does not like it?
He can exchange it for another size within seven days at either of our Delhi shops, and we will help over WhatsApp if he lives elsewhere.
